Jeff Allen gets serious about the challenges of caregivers.
While recognized as one of the best comedians in America, Jeff Allen also understands the path of a caregiver. Calling my radio show for caregivers to discuss his experience, Jeff also discussed lessons learned from the journey. Even in the difficult things, however, Jeff demonstrates how to appreciate the funny moments—giving much needed relief that our hearts desperately need.
My grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, and my mom and her sisters were taking care of her. I remember listening to them, and they were cutting up and laughing. I looked at her and said, “Why are you laughing, Grandma’s sick?”
She looked at me and said, “Jeffrey, we’ve cried enough about this. If you don’t laugh about it, it will just eat you alive.”
Part of my own journey as a caregiver is to learn to laugh from a healthy place. The moment I heard Jeff’s comedy, I loved his humor. While many comedians work out their angst on stage, takes cheap shots at others, and/or go vulgar, Jeff brings a fresh and much needed outlook on life. Jeff’s audiences know they can trust him to lighten their hearts and raise their spirits while avoiding the dark places so many behind the microphones choose these days.
As a caregiver, I make it a point to listen to comedians; I just love to laugh and see the world through a funny lens. The things we deal with as caregivers are painful enough, and it’s like Jeff’s mom so beautifully stated: “…we’ve cried enough about this.”
Thank you Jeff for calling the show and sharing your heart, as well as your humor!
Performing in theaters, on television and radio, and as a keynote for corporate functions and fundraisers, Jeff Allen’s comedy continues to delight audiences. His Happy Wife, Happy Life® message of a marriage gone wrong and redeemed has given laughter and encouragement to millions of people. Jeff’s comedy drives home the humor in everyday family life and the joy derived from a healthy marriage.
